The Kfir ("Lion Cub") grew out of a need for Israel to become self-sufficient in jet fighter production after France cut off the supply of Mirage aircraft in 1967. It is based on the Mirage III design, but adds several distinctive features including canard foreplanes, a more powerful engine (the General Electric J79), and a reshaped fuselage. The C7 is the latest model.
